Artificial Intelligence Experiments Makes Musk Worried

Musk and others worry about “huge AI experiments” being done too soon

Hundreds of prominent artificial intelligence (AI) experts, including Tesla owner Elon Musk, have signed an open letter encouraging artificial intelligence laboratories to reconsider developing massive AI systems due to the “deep hazards” they represent.

The Future of Life Institute published a statement stating that artificial intelligence labs are currently engaged in an “out-of-control race” to develop and deploy machine learning systems that “no one, not even their inventors, can reliably comprehend, forecast, or control.”

What did the letter say about artificial intelligence?

“Artificial intelligence systems that are smarter than humans can be extremely hazardous to society and civilization,” the letter stated.

“Powerful AI systems should not be developed unless we are sure that their impacts will be positive and their hazards are manageable. AI developers from around the globe want to ensure that researchers have sufficient time to ensure the safety of these powerful artificial intelligence systems.

The signatories include author Yuval Noah Harari, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, Skype co-founder Jaan Tallinn, legislator Andrew Yang, and a number of prominent artificial intelligence academics and CEOs, including Stuart Russell, Yoshua Bengio, Gary Marcus, and Emad Mostaque.

What was the major cause of the letter?

The major cause for the letter was the publication of GPT-4 by the San Francisco-based business OpenAI.

The business claims that its newest model is significantly more intelligent than its previous model, which was used to power ChatGPT, a bot that could compose lengthy text passages based on the tiniest commands.

“As a result, we request that all artificial intelligence labs cease training AI systems more capable than GPT-4 for at least six months,” the letter states. “This halt should be public and easily verifiable, and it should involve all the key players. if such a pause cannot be implemented swiftly, the government should impose a moratorium.”.

Musk’s company, Tesla, also develops AI systems:

Musk was one of the initial investors in OpenAI and remained on its board for a long time. Musk’s company, Tesla, also develops artificial intelligence systems, which are used to power its self-driving technology, among other things.

The letter was hosted by the Future of Life Institute, which is sponsored by Musk, and was signed by well-known critics of OpenAI as well as competitors, such as Emad Mostaque, the leader of Stability AI.

Sam Altman, the founder of OpenAI, stated in a blog post, “At some point, it may be necessary to obtain an independent evaluation prior to training new systems,” which was cited in the letter.

The signatories of the open letter stated, “We concur. That time has arrived”.

The demand of all artificial intelligence labs immediately halt the training of artificial intelligence systems:

“Thus, we demand that all artificial intelligence labs immediately halt the training of AI systems more capable than GPT-4 for at least six months.”

They demanded that governments implement a moratorium if firms refused to comply.

The six-month period should be used to build safety rules, and AI governance mechanisms, and to refocus research on assuring AI systems are more precise, safe, “trustworthy, and loyal.”

The letter does not elaborate on the threats posed by GPT-4.
