Alone In The Dark Revival Announced With New Game
During the THQ Nordic Showcase 2022, it was revealed that the Alone in the Dark series is being revived with a new game.
The Alone in the Dark series is reborn with a new installment that reimagines the first game in the series. The original 1992 Alone in the Dark is often credited with creating the survival horror video game genre, at least for 3D games, with its innovative use of 3D models and static backgrounds, resulting in horror never seen before in games.
It’s undeniable that the Alone in the Dark series has had some bad entries over the years. Considered a low-quality clone of Resident Evil, 2001’s Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare, 2008’s Alone in the Dark received mixed reviews at launch, leading Atari to threaten to sue outlets due to the critical reaction, and 2015’s Alone in the Dark: Illumination was a multiplayer-only game that was criticized by critics, especially for being a sequel. Original Alone in the Dark was important to the horror genre, and its name still has meaning to those who remember playing it when it launched.
It’s time to get back to the Alone in the Dark series. It was announced during the THQ Nordic Digital Showcase 2022 that a new game in the Alone in the Dark series is being developed for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. The game is a third-person survival horror game that acts as a reimagining of the first game, where players can choose between Emily Hartwood or Edward Carnby as they travel to Derceto Manor in search of Emily’s missing uncle. A trailer for the game can be seen on the official THQ Nordic YouTube channel. Alone in the Dark is being developed by Pieces Interactive with Mikael Hedburgh ( SOMA, Amnesia ) serving as the game’s writer and narrative director.
Alone in the Dark is set in 1920s Louisiana, which means the game has a noir and jazz music aesthetic associated with the Lovecraftian horrors that roam the Derceto estate. The game will feature four classic survival horror gameplay elements: Combat, Puzzle, Exploration, and Story, and Emily and Edward’s story unfold over two campaigns (similar to Claire and Leon in Resident Evil 2 ), with each playthrough featuring several unique rollers and levels. The story is heavily inspired by the original Alone in the Dark trilogy while developing in its own unique direction.
Fans who attend GamesCom 2022 will have the opportunity to play the new Alone in the Dark, as the event will feature a unique playable teaser starring Alone in the Dark 2’s Grace. This will be a short prologue to the main storyline and will most likely not include any battles given that Grace is a young girl during the events of the story. The Grace teaser could be the last time fans see the game for a while, as the revival of Alone in the Dark is set to launch on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S, but there’s currently no release window for the game. and it seems unlikely that this will be one of the major video game releases of 2023.
