The Asus TUF Dash F15 FX517ZR is a mid-to-high-end gaming laptop with a QHD screen and balanced hardware: Core i7-12650H, RTX 3070, 16GB RAM, and 1TB SSD. The matte QHD screen provides full coverage of the DCI-P3 color space. An interesting feature: the laptop allows you to disable the energy-efficient Alder Lake cores.
Maximum performance is not the main priority of the Asus TUF Dash F15 FX517ZR – instead, it was decided to make the model more compact and lighter. To do this, I had to choose balanced parameters: Intel Core-i7-12650H processor, Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 graphics card (TGP: 105 W). As opponents, we have selected game models similar in concept: Razer Blade 15 Base Model, MSI Delta 15, Acer Nitro 5 AN515-58, and HP Omen 16.
Design and Features
The design of the Asus TUF Dash F15 FX517ZR is devoid of bright visible elements, except for the red rubber foot on the bottom of the structure. The lid and deck are painted black and the drip tray is grey; with a matte finish. Plastic (case base) and aluminum (lid) are used as manufacturing materials. The battery is built-in and therefore cannot be quickly replaced. To access the internal components, you will have to remove the pallet, since there is no quick-release cover.
The build quality of our sample is good, no defects or gaps between the parts were found. The strength of the structure is also normal, the base and the cover are only slightly deformable. The hinges hold the lid well in the required position, the maximum opening angle is 130 degrees. The screen can be easily opened with one hand.
MSI Delta 15 and tested Asus TUF Dash F15 FX517ZR was the lightest among the rivals. In terms of compactness, the leader is the Razer Blade 15.
Equipment
The Asus TUF Dash F15 FX517ZR has two USB-A (USB 3.2 Gen 1) and two USB-C (1x Thunderbolt 4, 1x USB 3.2 Gen 2) ports. The latter supports DisplayPort over USB-C, while the second USB 3.2 Gen 2 offers charging via Power Delivery. In total, the laptop has three video outputs (2x DP, and 1x HDMI). There’s also a combo audio jack, gigabit ethernet, and a lock slot. The card reader is missing.
The port layout is not the best: most of them are located on the left and moved closer to the front side of the case. It would not hurt to move 1-2 connectors from the left to the right side of the case.
Connection
Wi-Fi speed under optimal conditions (without other devices on the network, short distance to the router) is at an excellent level and corresponds to the capabilities of the installed adapter (Intel AX201; 802.11ax). The Intel I219-LM network controller is responsible for the wired connection.
Webcam
The webcam (0.9 MP) produces a picture with a resolution of 1280×720 pixels. At the same time, her color rendition is not the best: the shades differ markedly from the original tones. There is no privacy shutter.
Accessories
In addition to the standard documentation (user manual, warranty card), there are no other accessories included.
Service
To access the internal components, the chassis tray must be removed. In addition to the bolts around the perimeter, it is held by latches, which are easiest to loosen with a plastic spatula or card. The latches hold the pallet quite strongly,
so care must be taken. Inside there is access to SSD slots (PCIe 3, M.2 2280, two pieces), Wi-Fi adapter, battery, RAM, speakers, and cooling system.
