Aston Martin DBX Has A James Bond DB5 Easter Egg In Its Dashboard

Last weekend I had the pleasure of driving an Aston Martin DBX 707 , the performance variant of the British company’s first-ever SUV . There’s a lot to like about the DBX 707 (which, despite its name, is only rated for 697 hp in the US – the 707 figure refers to PS, the European power output measurement unit). But my favorite little detail is something I discovered the moment I activated the adaptive cruise control.

See, when you activate ACC, a little indicator appears on the all-digital dash to let you adjust how close you want to follow the vehicle in front of you. And while most automakers use a generic car icon in their ACC readout, the folks at Aston decided to have a little fun with it and put two vintage DB5s on the dash. Check it out:

It is not uncommon for automakers to put their own vehicles on the dashboard as icons/cartoons. Most companies outline their own designs for cruise control, drive mode, and other features, but more often than not the iconic vehicle is a cartoon version of the car you’re sitting in. Infiniti QX55 will show you cruising behind another QX55 when you set the cruise control following distance; a Ram 1500 displays a miniature Ram in the instrument cluster when you change settings or transmission modes. Aston went even further by choosing to represent the most iconic model in the history of the brand on the dashboard.

This little treat delighted me so much that I contacted Aston Martin to find out a bit more about the story behind it. Turns out the emoji-DB5 has been part of the DBX digital dashboard since the vehicle debuted for the 2021 model year. So far the little DB5 hasn’t featured on any other Aston dashboard, but I’m willing to bet it will be included in Aston’s sports car models whenever those vehicles get their next mid-air refresh. cycle.

Aston Martin is always keen to present the DB5. And for good reason: it’s not just James Bond’s canonical car, it is permanently in the top 3 of the list of the most beautiful cars ever built, alongside the Jaguar E-Type and the Ferrari 250 GTO. ( Editor’s note: Unfortunately, Bob is wrong; the most beautiful cars ever made are the Lamborghini Miura and the Ford GT40.) J a DB5 exudes classic sports car styling; you can’t see one without imagining a high-speed trip across Europe, perhaps avoiding SPECTER or SMERSH in the process.

I love that kind of thing in cars. It shows attention to detail and a willingness to have fun with what would otherwise be a boring and simple cruise control function. If your company’s history included a universal object of desire like the DB5
