Paramount’s R-rated thriller “Smile” continues to exceed box office expectations in North America and beyond. Over the weekend, the horror film took in $16.3 million at the international box office, taking its overseas tally to $66.4 million.

Worldwide, “Smile” grossed $137.5 million, a fatal blow for a film budgeted at $17 million. It’s an even bigger bonus when you consider that “Smile” was originally commissioned for streaming service Paramount+ and wasn’t meant to play in theaters at all. But positive audition offers encouraged Paramount to give the film a full theatrical release. It is the latest hit from the studio after “Top Gun: Maverick”, “The Lost City”, “Scream” and “Sonic the Hedgehog 2”.

Ticket sales for “Sonrisa”, which is shown in 61 international markets, are down just 16% from last weekend. The most profitable markets include the UK at $8.1 million, Germany at $6.6 million, Mexico at $6.1 million, France at $4.8 million, and Australia at $3.4 million.

Also at the international box office, “Ticket to Paradise” defies the prospects of theatrical romantic comedies. The film, which stars George Clooney and Julia Roberts as a former couple who bond over a common cause, grossed $72 million overseas. That’s a good sign as the Two-Handed Man prepares to land in North America on October 21.

As for newcomers, “Halloween Ends,” the grand finale of the long-running slasher series, started with $17.2 million from 77 overseas markets. It’s not a bad result, but it’s not a good one either considering the sub-million-dollar discount on “Smile,” which has been playing in theaters for three weeks. Domestically, “Halloween Ends” opened with $41.2 million when it landed on Day and Date at Peacock, bringing its worldwide credit to $58.4 million.

Jamie Lee Curtis returns as a deeply traumatized grandmother in “Halloween Ends,” the third entry in the reboot trilogy. Although 2018’s Halloween was a huge success at the international box office grossing $96 million, the 2021 sequel Halloween Kills earned less than half that amount, grossing $39 million overseas.
