Four doors, four seats, all-wheel drive and a naturally aspirated V12, but no trailer hitch
A new Ferrari is always something special, but this one is even more special. For years, the Purosangue has been haunted by the press under the keyword “Ferrari SUV“. Now it is officially presented. And we would spontaneously suggest the abbreviation FPV: Ferrari Practical Vehicle.
Because at first glance, the thoroughbred (as Purosangue translates ) doesn’t look like a classic SUV , but more like a more practical Ferrari . The company itself also avoids the term SUV or crossover as much as possible. One thing is certain: this is the first Ferrari with rear doors.
Four seats, four doors, a lot of weight
Enrico Galliera, Chief Commercial and Marketing Officer, explains why the car exists at all: “To be honest, the demand for a car that allows our customers to drive with the family in a four-seater has been coming for many years We tried to answer that with our previous four-seaters , which offered performance but didn’t reach the level of comfort and versatility, because of the difficulties getting in and out, and now we’ve found an answer, because we have a technical solution found that allows us not to compromise on performance.”
Galliera continues: “We had a different approach: we wanted to have a sports car. When you drive it, you have the feeling of sitting in a two-seater sports car. But we also wanted to add comfort and versatility.”
There is hardly any information about the dimensions. Only so much: 185 mm ground clearance, 473 liters of luggage space plus foldable seats. The Purosangue is massive: the curb weight is 2,053 kilograms, 2,033 kg is the dry weight with all optional equipment in the form of carbon fiber that reduces the weight of the car, without liquid and oil and so on.
Oh, and of course there is NO trailer hitch. According to Ferrari, the chassis would have had to be changed for any train operation. But solutions are being developed that allow you to take a bike or skis or whatever with you. By the way, here is the configurator.
All-wheel drive and V12 suction
A clear announcement from Ferrari: The lap time of Fiorano is only given for two-seater sports cars. Bad luck for the Purosangue … which, by the way, can be seen in titanium gray in the first pictures.
Once again Signore Galliera: “Of course the off-road capability of the car is higher than that of a normal Ferrari. So you can also use the car off-road, but it’s certainly not a jeep, I have to say. We didn’t develop the car to cope with big inclines or mud.
But it’s certainly a car that, for the first time, can show the performance of a Ferrari on other roads. Certainly on very wet roads or with a lot of snow, or even on the so-called “white roads” in Italy that are not asphalted.”
The Ferrari Purosangue’s engine is front-mid and the gearbox is rear-mounted, creating a transaxle configuration. The Power Transfer Unit (PTU) is coupled in front of the engine, providing a unique 4×4 transmission. This results in a weight distribution of 49:51%, which the designers from Maranello see as optimal for a sports car with a mid-engine.
The Ferrari Purosangue is said to stand out clearly from the market thanks to its performance and comfort. It is the only one in its segment to be equipped with a naturally aspirated V12 engine (codename F140IA) designed as a front mid-engine. A displacement of 6.5 liters, dry sump and high-pressure direct injection, 533 kW (725 hp) at 7750 rpm, 716 Nm at 6250 rpm plus a fine sound are the order of the day.
In addition, the twelve-wheeler delivers 80 percent torque even at low speeds. The intake, control and exhaust systems have been completely revised, while the cylinder heads are from the 812 Competizione . The driving performance: 3.3 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h and 10.6 seconds from 0 to 200 km/h.
New 8-speed DCT plus active suspension
The primary goal in the aerodynamic development of Ferrari Purosangue was to make the body, underbody and rear diffuser as efficient as possible. The new approach creates a synergy between the front bumper and the wheel arch liner. These create an air curtain that aerodynamically seals the front wheels and prevents the formation of turbulent cross-flows.
Ferrari has also given the Purosangue the very latest versions of the vehicle dynamics control systems already introduced on its most powerful and exclusive sports cars, including four-wheel independent steering and ABS with the 6-way chassis dynamic sensor (6w-CDS).
Ferrari’s new active suspension system is also celebrating a world premiere. It very effectively controls body roll in corners and tire contact patch on closely spaced bumps. This means that the same performance and handling as one of the brand’s sports cars can be achieved.
The all-new body features a carbon fiber roof as standard, keeping weight down and lowering the center of gravity. Due to the all-new design, rear-hinged doors were installed to facilitate entry and exit and to keep the vehicle as compact as possible.
The design of the 8-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT) with oil bath has been optimized with dry sump lubrication and a significantly more compact clutch assembly, which has allowed the overall height in the vehicle to be reduced by 15 mm, which in turn lowers the center of gravity by the same amount. The performance of the new clutch is 35% higher, it transmits a dynamic torque of up to 1200 Nm when shifting.
Thanks to a new generation of actuating hydraulics, the filling times of the clutch are now shorter, so that the overall shifting times could be reduced compared to the previous 7-speed DCT. Gear ratios are the same as the SF90 Stradale and 296 GTB .
The doors open in opposite directions
For ergonomic reasons, Ferrari has focused on providing as much entry space as possible while keeping the wheelbase compact. To achieve this, a traditional opening of the front doors with an opening angle of 63 degrees was chosen, five degrees larger than other Ferrari models. The rear doors of the rear open electrically, the opening angle is 79 degrees.
The aluminum tailgate is also electrically operated: it can be opened up to 73 degrees with two electric tailgate lifters, which facilitates access to the trunk and simplifies the loading and unloading of even larger items of luggage. The swan neck hinges also allow unconventional aesthetic shapes in the upper spoiler area.
The unconventional position of the headlights made it possible to create two air intakes above and below the daytime running lights. The upper air intake serves to direct the air into the complex blown system, the vent of which is under the forward “aerobridge”. The lower one, on the other hand, directs the air to the brake cooling system.
The 4RM system of the GTC4Lusso has been further developed for the Ferrari Purosangue and now adopts the innovations of the control logic developed for the four-wheel drive of the SF90 Stradale, combined with the new independent four-wheel steering (4WS) of the 812 Competizione.
The Ferrari Purosangue offers an impressive array of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) as standard, such as Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB), Automatic Low/High Beam (HBA/HBAM), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Lane Departure Warning (LKA), Blind Spot Assist (BSD), Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR), Drowsiness and Attention Assist (DDA) and Parking Camera (NSW).
A feature available for the first time on a Ferrari model is HDC (Hill Descent Control) to control a set driving speed on steep slopes.
The driver’s cockpit is inspired by the SF90 Stradale and is mirrored almost one-to-one on the passenger side. Our thought: practical for the production of right-hand drive vehicles. Ferrari praises “an unparalleled sense of emotional engagement for the passenger,” supported by a 10.2-inch display that provides all the information needed to engage the passenger in the driving experience.
Comfort-related controls are located on a retractable knob in the center of the dashboard, while rear occupants have access to the same functions via a second knob. The luxuriously clad center console is paired with a Y-shaped structural element dominated by the metal shift gate.
Less obvious but equally well-designed elements are the window regulator buttons, the elegant double glass cup holder and the key compartment in combination with the mobile device charging zone. The upholstered areas, designed for comfort, integrate armrests and door handles. For the first time in Ferrari history, the cabin features four separate and independently adjustable seats.
Bulletproof carpet as an option
The heated rear seats adjust and recline independently. When folded all the way forward, the Ferrari Purosangue’s boot capacity increases significantly.
The headliner is made from recycled polyester, the carpet is made from polyamide recycled from ocean fishing nets and reformulated Alcantara. The Purosangue is the first vehicle in the world to use this special version of Alcantara, made from 68 percent recycled polyester.
A bit curious: Instead of the traditional carpet or leather for the flooring, there is also the option of a bulletproof ballistic fabric, which is also used in military uniforms due to its exceptional resistance and durability.
Another option is a new, very elegant and modern dark brown semi-aniline leather. The optional carbon fiber fairing with the finest copper wire is a state-of-the-art twist on traditional carbon fiber. The Burmester® 3D High-End Surround Sound System is being offered as standard equipment for the first time in a Ferrari.
Market launch in spring 2023
Among the colors offered at launch, Nero Purosangue was specially developed for this vehicle. For the first time at Ferrari, owners have the option to personalize their vehicle’s roof: they can opt for a full-length electrochromic glass roof instead of the standard carbon fiber version. For the first time, the model also offers compatibility with the Android Auto and Apple CarPlay systems as standard. These replace the previous navigation system.
Deliveries in left-hand drive European countries will take place in the second quarter. Ferrari calls 390,000 euros as the base price. But even those with enough money don’t necessarily get a Purosangue: “In the beginning, most of our production is delivered to our collectors or existing customers, who we call family members,” says Enrico Galliera.
