Doom Eternal Review A New Dose Of Violence, action, and fun

Doom is a beloved classic of the 90s that started the popularization of the first-person shooter genre. The key features of the series were carefully preserved and not only transferred to subsequent parts, but also successfully borrowed in many other projects. As is customary with a good classic, it needs to be re-released, but in a modern guise and with the preservation of its atmosphere and the main aspects of the gameplay. In 2016, the reboot of Doom came out, which successfully revived the series by presenting it at its best. Well, 4 years later, Doom Eternal comes out and many ask the logical question: “What can the continuation offer us?” And it has a lot to offer us.

From Mars to Earth

Eternal is a direct sequel to the 2016 game and after successfully defeating the demonic forces on Mars, Doom Slayer returns to Earth. However, not everything is so simple on the native planet. A portal to Hell opened up here too, and crowds of demons of various shapes and sizes poured into the human world. The protagonist loads a shotgun, machine gun, and rocket launcher and goes into battle.

The plot is simple and clear. It partially repeats the events of Doom II: Hell on Earth in 1994. As you might guess, in a game about killing demons with an unnamed protagonist, it is naive to expect an exciting and fascinating story. Nevertheless, there is a plot, a colorful main character, an interesting setting and a lot of colorful demons are also available. Well, what else does a lover of a good shooter need?

Crush, break, dismember, kill

And now, after a few introductory videos, we finally get weapons and start doing what we love Doom so much for – killing hordes of demons. Immediately striking is that the developers decided to make the gameplay more dynamic and fast. In the hands of the protagonist, a shotgun immediately turns out to be, and an ineffective pistol, which was needed only for appearance, remained in Doom 2016. Weapons have become more diverse. The same legendary double-barreled shotgun has got a special hook for climbing obstacles or pulling enemies towards itself, acting as a harpoon. As in all modern shooters, weapon upgrades also appeared. Now he has an additional firing mode, and if you wish, you can improve it with various body kits, such as sights and larger magazines. Despite,

Speaking of levels. They have become bigger, richer, and more thoughtful. Locations on Earth filled with monsters amaze with their design and variety. Open arenas, narrow corridors, small hills on which you can jump – all this allows you to get the maximum pleasure from battles with enemies. The developers slightly reworked the movement of the hero, so now he jumps and climbs obstacles more easily and quickly. This gives more dynamics to each battle and makes the passage more exciting.

With the demons themselves, the Executioner of Doom does not particularly stand on ceremony. In close combat, limbs are torn off, eyes are torn out, bones are broken, and bodies are sawn with a chainsaw. If you came to Doom Eternal for fun, action, and violence, then you will get it in full here. Nevertheless, the gameplay cannot be called too simple and easy. Even on the average difficulty level, ordinary demons can give you trouble, especially when there are quite a few of them. Developers maintain a clear balance between fun and the complexity of the passage. There are also bosses in the game and they cannot be called particularly difficult, but it is unlikely that they will be easy to pass. On the other hand, nothing prevents you from setting the difficulty level to the maximum and experiencing all the hardcore of Eternal.

It is worth noting that Eternal is not only action with killing enemies. In order for players to take a break before the next battle and take a breath, the developers added platforming elements and simple puzzles to the game. Most of them are built on the presence of a new movement mechanic in the game – the double jump. The presence of platforming and puzzle elements allows players not to get oversaturated with an abundance of action and battles, and also introduce a little variety into the gameplay, which definitely does not hurt the game.

The beauty of the Earth after the invasion

The picture in the game looks at the highest level. It’s not even worth comparing the game here with the first part of 2016, the difference is visible to the naked eye. The monsters have become more detailed, and the locations are colorful and thoughtful. The graphics in the game meets all modern requirements and will pleasantly surprise fans with a good picture.

Sounds of Eternal

The game’s soundtrack was composed by Mick Gordon, who, in addition to the 2016 Doom soundtrack, also wrote music for games such as Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, Prey, and many others. The soundtrack in the game will pleasantly surprise music lovers and just lovers of good musical accompaniment in games. Music well enhances the atmosphere and sets up for even more destruction of demons.

Finally

Doom Eternal is the best sequel you could wish for a reboot of the Doom series. The sequel has retained the spirit and canons of the original games, and the presence of even very minor innovations, such as the same pumping of weapons, only pleases and looks organically with the general concept of the game. The sequel has become more dynamic, varied, and intense compared to the game of 2016, and can pleasantly surprise all fans of brutal shooters with an abundance of cruelty and violence. Hopefully, Bethesda will continue to please with such games, and the restart of the series will further elevate the Doom universe, thanks to the presence of such games.
