Gaming Transformer with mini-LED Screen Review

Gaming transformer with mini-LED screen

Touch mini-LED with 1100 nits of brightness. 1100 nit HDR mini-LED screen: The Asus ROG Flow X16 is the first gaming 16-inch convertible that runs cooler and quieter than other advanced laptops despite its 140W TDP.

The screen with a mini-LED backlight is capable of providing brightness up to 1100 nits – this is the main feature of the Asus ROG Flow X16 gaming transformer, which in itself is already a curiosity. The Nvidia RTX 3070 Ti graphics card with 125W TGP installed in this laptop will provide excellent performance not only in games but also in multimedia applications.

We received a pre-sale sample of the laptop for review, but according to Asus, it corresponds to the sales version, so the final assessment is included in the article. The manufacturer specifies that the final sample for general sale may receive some minor modifications, and if this happens, we will update this review. We also got our hands on a ROG XG Mobile external graphics card  (sold separately) with an integrated mobile Nvidia RTX 3080 that connects to the Flow X16 just like it did last year’s ROG Flow X13. Tests with her participation will be added to this review a little later.

ROG Flow X16 is another unique convertible laptop from Asus that can be put on par with  ROG Flow X13  and ROG Flow Z13 (gaming tablet). The tested model has a 16:10 QHD screen that delivers deep blacks similar to OLED thanks to mini-LED carpet backlighting, and also provides a full DCI-P3 color gamut. Stylus support is a solid touchscreen perk that makes the laptop more practical, while the powerful AMD Ryzen 6900HS processor promises superior performance. On paper, the ROG Flow X16’s specifications look great, but its real capabilities will only be known after comprehensive tests.

For review, we were provided with an Asus Rog Flow X16 configuration with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 Ti, 32 GB of RAM, and a 1 TB SSD – this option is not yet available for sale.

This 16-inch transformer has no direct rivals today. However, the manufacturer Asus Rog Flow X16 is positioned as a tool for work, play, and work with multimedia content, and therefore the list of models similar in positioning is impressive: Gigabyte Aero 16, MSI Stealth GS66, Lenovo Legion 5 Pro, Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme, MacBook Pro 16 (2021), Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio, Dell XPS 17 and Asus Zephyrus M16.

The last of them is in many ways similar to the ROG Flow X16, as you will see for yourself as you read the review. The comparison with the more compact  ROG Flow X13 looks interesting, as well as with the bulky gaming monster  Asus ROG Strix Scar 15. Another 16-inch convertible – HP Specter 16 – based on Intel Core i7-12700H with mid-range Intel Arc graphics card and 3K OLED touch screen will appear only by the end of August; another alternative for the foreseeable future could be the Lenovo Legion Slim 7i, which will be available with a mini-LED screen.
