The fight has been called “the truth” by promoters and there may not be a more fitting label, as everything being revealed about Paul and Fury (Sunday, 2 p.m. ET, ESPN + PPV ).

Despite constant criticism from boxing ‘traditionalists’, Paul has proven himself to be a dedicated boxer, utilizing the resources he gained from his acting days on the Disney Channel and a successful career as an influencer for organizing serious training camps. Yet his profile has resulted in an untraditional roster of opponents as he cannot face the low-level, nameless competition that marks the start of almost every professional boxer’s career.

Paul started his career with a first-round failure of social media influencer AnEsonGib before former NBA star Nate Robinson suffered a vicious viral knockout. He then targeted stars of the mixed martial arts world, knocking out an out-of-shape and demotivating Ben Askren before a split decision against former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley.

When the first scheduled fight with Fury fell through due to Fury’s injury, Paul punched Woodley again and scored another crushing knockout. Another fight with Fury was canceled at the end of 2022 when Fury was denied entry to the United States, leading to Paul planning a fight with Hasim Rahman Jr. only for that fight to fall apart and also when Rahman exceeded the weight limit in the contract. question asked if he had signed up for the fight.

“The third time is a spell, and here we are. I’m in great shape,” Fury said at the final press conference. “I’m ready to put it all to bed because for two and a half years it’s been ‘When are you going to fight Jake Paul?’ Even mentioning my name in the same sentence is disrespectful to me, a person who has boxed all my life. I’m going to knock this guy out early.”

The scheduled fights with Fury and Rahman were attempts to address one of the most common criticisms of Paul’s career: he had never been in the ring with someone who had trained as a professional boxer for years. years.

Paul would fight someone who has found success in the ring in his next fight, facing UFC legend Anderson Silva last September. Silva had previously beaten former middleweight boxing champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and although he had spent most of his life as a mixed martial artist, he presented an interesting challenge with his length, style clumsy, and legitimate skills.

Paul scored a late knockdown of Silva and picked up a decision win, but was again criticized for not being a “real boxer” and for taking on a 47-year-old. So Paul returned to the Fury fight one last time, with the fight taking place in Saudi Arabia to avoid ongoing visa issues for the Fury family due to their alleged ties to alleged crime boss Daniel Kinahan.

“I’m so excited for this fight because I can finally silence the critics who said, ‘Fight a professional boxer, fight someone your age. I agree. I haven’t proven that. But that’s why this fight is so important,” Paul said. “That’s why I’m so excited. That’s why I gave this guy several chances and paid him so much money that he would finally show up. And it really seemed like only then would he want to step out of the ring when I raised the amount of money. Luckily, he’s here now.

Known both as the younger half-brother of heavyweight champion Tyson Fury and for his role on the UK TV show Love Island, Fury has had a more traditional boxing career than Paul, although he is a better predictor of the future. Boxing success is up for debate.

Fury’s eight pro opponents had a combined record of 24-176-5 when they faced Fury, with nearly every one of those opponents functioning as a “pro opponent” with careers focused on losing against fighters varying in outlook at take into account.

In his last fight, Fury faced Daniel Bocianski, who entered the fight with a 10-1 record despite losing by TKO in his previous match. Fury made a decision in what was largely a boring fight in which he scored a knockdown despite not doing anything else during the fight.

And so it is that we finally see these two men, neither a truly accomplished boxer nor both with resumes that don’t stand up to scrutiny, finally fight to reveal a piece of “The Truth.”

At the pre-fight press conference, Paul offered an “all or nothing” bet for the fight, with Paul doubling his purse if Fury wins. But if Paul won, Fury wouldn’t get any money.

The bet was eventually accepted by Fury’s father, John Fury, who said, “If he can’t beat Jake Paul, Tommy doesn’t deserve it [to be] paid.”

Of course, such arrangements are often thrown around, but basically never really put into practice. Fury is making far more money from this fight than from any previous appearance and the idea that he would leave Saudi Arabia empty-handed in defeat seems unlikely.

Before we get to a prediction and expert picks for the main event, let’s take a look at the rest of the fight card with the latest odds from Caesars Sportsbook.

Paul vs Fury card odds

Jacques Paul-170             Tommy Fury +145            Cruiserweight (185 lbs. variable weight)

Junior gifts (c) -1               Badou Jack +160               WBC heavyweight title

Bad Samreen      Simon Viorel       Light

Muhsin Cason    Tarel Yafarov       cruiserweight

It’s worth noting that from a competitive standpoint, this is a perfectly reasonable matchup for both men. Both have proven their ability to handle the level of competition they have fought before and both have the wherewithal and resources to set up comparable fight camps.

Between the vicious trash talk and the questioning of both fighters’ true qualities in the ring, there’s a legitimately well-timed match between two young fighters who need exactly the level of opponents they’ll face on Sunday.

Fury probably comes into the fight a bit more technical, but he’s shown throughout his career that he’s not really capable of putting his foot down against some low-level opponents. His jab is very good and could be Paul’s biggest obstacle. If Fury can establish his jab early and put Paul in the face, that might be enough to earn points on the scoreboard.

Meanwhile, Paul has legit one-punch knockout power. He clearly improved fight after fight, showing a willingness to learn and grow and underrated adaptability during fights. Paul does a good job of processing information and using it to put up big punches, and he also remains committed to throwing punches to the body. However, Paul can get into stretches where he just isn’t throwing enough punches while trying to land a bomb with his right hand.

Say what you will about Paul’s opponent so far but he’s fought a number of men who aren’t afraid to compete on the biggest stage and who came to the ring hoping to see the fight win. Paul was able to care for these men and grew in the process. Fury has yet to face an opponent that truly poses a threat to win his fight.

With Paul, the naturally bigger man with the more aggressive approach to fights, it seems only right to side with him to win the grudge match. It should also be noted that Paul has completed eight rounds – the length of this fight – twice, while Fury has only completed six full rounds once. Paul’s punches could play a big part in how this plays out. Pick: Jake Paul TKO5
