Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered PC Review

Despite its four-year-old age and familiar mechanics, Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man game is still captivating and addictive. A dramatic story, addictive gameplay, and stunning graphics are now available on PC. Is it worth devoting time to a former PlayStation exclusive? Let’s figure it out!

Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered PC Review

Marvel’s Spider-Man is a third-person shooter that brings together the best of the friendly neighbor projects. You fall into the game with your head, and after a couple of hours, you find yourself flying on the web and preventing crimes.

Great power – great responsibility

The story of Peter Parker this time does not begin with the tragic death of his uncle. The protagonist is a seasoned superhero who has been fighting crime for more than ten years. In addition to supervillains, Parker is also haunted by typical human failures – paying for an apartment, being fired from work, and helping an old aunt. The plot shows the hero and his principles: Peter rushes to help, not thinking about himself. There is no hesitation, no doubt – once a student, and now a promising scientist destroys his own life for the sake of others. This is reflected in the ending – it is impossible not to let a man tear.

The plot part is not only self-sufficient but also replete with references, saturated with love for the superhero. Insomniac seems to have taken their favorite “Spiders” and compiled a single image, not forgetting about new ideas. Spider-Man fans will be pleased with the story. For 20 hours, the story keeps the player at the screen with staging, dialogue, and characters – a few studios today create something like this. Even those who are not involved in the Marvel universe are likely to be satisfied.

The only thing that catches your eye is the changed face of Peter Parker in the remaster. The original Spider looked older, facial expressions were more expressive. The new Parker looks too young, and the hero’s emotions have become worse. In most scenes, Parker smiles, as if there were no other facial animations. I did not play Miles Morales, but I want to believe that the hero worked out better there. And they will work on the bugs in the second part.

He’s not Batman!

As part of the combat system, Insomniac did not reinvent the wheel but combined the best practices from other Spider-Man games. Marvel’s Spider-Man is compared to the Batman Arkham series, but from there the developers borrowed only the idea of gadgets. Hits, dodges, web-flying, and mid-air combat were all long before the Rocksteady games.

Combat is easy to master. Spiderman’s arsenal includes hitting, jumping, using gadgets, pulling toward enemies on the poutine, and dodging. But by combining the elements of the combat system together, the player is able to turn the scuffle into a dance – it depends only on the desire to learn the intricacies of the gameplay.

5On the “Amazing” difficulty level, I had to use all the tricks and tricks – enemies run in a crowd, attack together, shoot, throw grenades and try to go behind my back. After the next sweep of the “outpost”, you find a hero with empty pockets – the gadgets are spent in battle without a trace.

Leveling also helps to diversify the battle – three branches of development with passive and active skills. The part unlocks additional combinations of moves: throw the enemy aside after being hit, jump into the crowd and scatter them with a shock wave. Others are responsible for parkour and making it easier to move around the city.

Take from Ubisoft and make it better

You will have to fly around the open world often, but it’s nice to do it even after 30 hours of gameplay – thanks to the web flight system. Only Spider-Man: Web of Shadows and Spider-Man 3 can compare with it. The web clings to buildings, the hero has well-developed body physics, and during the game, you feel the burden of controlling the character. Especially when you fly through the city, barely touching the ground and gaining incredible speed.

And in order not to fly idle, Insomniac filled the world not only with the plot but also with side activities. Some reviewers say that the world of Marvel’s Spider-Man is reminiscent of Ubisoft games and I agree with this opinion. Outposts, exclamation marks with random events, a couple of types of collectibles – everything is in place. But the developers of Spider-Man didn’t just take a template – they made it better.

The bases of the enemies are made with fiction. Each new “outpost” is more difficult than the previous one, filled with new enemies or combat conditions: one is located in a warehouse, another on the roof, and the next one is in the port. Situations change each other, and the player himself does not understand how he cleared all the points of interest. Unless in addition, the developers cheated a little and made the bases look similar.

I also want to throw a stone at those who decided to fill the city with “Tests”. This is a completely secondary activity, but it is present in the game and this infuriates me. Tests of stealth, combat skills, and speed of the Spider are an eyesore and fill the map of virtual New York, and it is boring and uninteresting to go through them even for the first time, not to mention subsequent ones.

The boyars are satisfied

The porting was handled by Nixxies, and these guys did wonders. On the i7-5690X, RTX 2060, and 32 GB of RAM, the game runs at maximum settings with DLSS, at 60 frames per second. Turning on RTX drops the frequency to 45-55 frames per second, but if you play around with the settings, you will be able to knock out the coveted 60 fps. In some fights, the frame rate drops to 30, but there was one time on the side “outpost”.

Without RTX reflections, it becomes difficult to play as soon as you see them in action. The city is reflected in the glass. The only, in my memory, tracing implementation that justifies the requirements for hardware. But it is clear that the developers have encountered the technology for the first time – sometimes there are bugs with the display of objects in an enclosed space.

I also want to praise Nixxies for convenient control using the keyboard and mouse. I played through Marvel’s Spider-Man with custom buttons and enjoyed it. With the mouse, it is easier to move around the city, fight and look around – I can no longer play with the clumsy controller camera.

Diagnosis

Improved textures, competent implementation of reflections, and a beautiful city are fascinating. Beating the bandits in the face from time to time is so nice that the local “outposts” were cleared by themselves – thanks to the custom keyboard and mouse controls. Excellent optimization and lack of bugs helped to spend glorious 30 hours in Marvel’s Spider-Man. And, most likely, I will leave the same amount in virtual New York – not all achievements are open yet!

Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered PC Review

The PC port was a success, and Marvel’s Spider-Man has stood the test of time. For 4 years, the game has not become more boring, and familiar mechanics are also perceived as fresh – learn, Ubisoft! Even after completing the game at 100% in 2020, having received the “platinum trophy” and having had enough of the Spider, I again fell into his network. Looking forward to Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales on PC this fall – better than Insomniac, hardly anyone will make games about a friendly neighbor.
