When it comes to the best generation-defining games, games like Grand Theft Auto 3, Halo, or Final Fantasy X come to mind. But there is one project that is often overlooked – it’s “Max Payne”. Developed by Remedy Entertainment and publisher Gathering of Developers (prior to being acquired by Rockstar Games), the game was released in July 2001 on PC to rave reviews from critics and gamers alike. Max Payne stood out from other contemporaries with its neo-noir style, artistic cutscenes, and gameplay, where the hero used time dilation similar to The Matrix. The game’s story was written by head writer Sam Lake while still in college. The story follows Max Payne, a New York City detective who joins the DEA after his family is murdered. He began his investigation and went to the drug dealers Valkyrie.
A field of such success, in 2003 a sequel called “Max Payne 2” was released. The third part appeared only in 2012, and Rockstar itself was already working on its creation. But the release of remakes of the first two Max Payne will have to wait a long time. The remedy stated that they are still in the concept stage. This means that players can play updated projects only after a few years. Also in the press release, Remedy noted that it will be using its own Northlight game engine. This game engine powers several of the company’s previous projects, such as Quantum Break, Control, and Alan Wake. Northlight was also used to develop the single-player mode in CrossFire X, although the multiplayer module was already running on Unreal Engine 4.
Based on the characteristics of the engine, it is likely that Max Payne will be adapted to the next generation of devices, which will affect the visuals and control system. Also, we should expect the addition of photorealistic videos in which you can control the character. Remakes will appear in a few years, and it is likely that Remedy and Rockstar will focus on creating the most optimal product. Since these are some of the most loved games of the early 2000s, the company needs to make them for the players, not for the money.
