Why is a Brazil-sized space bubble idea considered serious?

As temperatures rise around the world and huge glaciers in the Antarctic melt faster than ever before, climate change is having a bigger and bigger effect on the world around us.

A lot of countries have plans to reach “net zero” carbon emissions in the future, but that day is still a long way off, and climate activists like Greta Thunberg say those plans are crap.

To fix the problems on Earth, a lot of changes will have to be made, and that might mean coming up with new solutions.


Scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) are working on this. Their plan is to make a shield of frozen bubbles suspended in space that will reflect some of the sun’s light away from the Earth.
These space bubbles are part of a technology called solar geoengineering. They are meant to reflect the sun’s light away from our planet to keep it cool.

At the moment, solar geoengineering is used to fight climate change by spreading aerosols into the upper atmosphere of the Earth to reflect light away and cool the planet.


But putting aerosols into the air could have other bad effects that we don’t know about yet. That’s why putting the technology into space might be the best solution.

The researchers were able to make a shield of space bubbles out of silicon that can live in a place with low pressure and cold temperatures that is similar to space.

The Earth may be protected from the harmful effects of solar radiation by a raft in space made of small, inflated bubbles, which would also deflect some of the light coming from the Sun.

Unlike earlier attempts to geoengineer our planet, such as dissolving gases in the stratosphere, astronomers believe that this method would not interfere with ecosystems on Earth and, as a result, would have less of an influence on the animals and plants that live here.

However, the purpose of this approach is solely to augment – and not replace – the existing efforts being made by humans to reduce the effects of climate change.

MIT said that they could make rafts out of these bubbles and put them in space in the right place to block out the sun’s light.

Scientists have already found the best place for their bubble shield: the L1 Lagrangian Point, a place in space where the Earth’s and Sun’s gravity cancel each other out.

The bubbles have been tested in temperatures as low as -50°C, which means they should be fine in the freezing cold of space.

There is a small problem with this plan for a series of bubble rafts, though. For the plan to work, the size of the shield as a whole will have to be somewhere in the “Brazil” area.

If you think it would be hard to make a bubble shield the size of Brazil and send it into space, you’re right.

Scientists have come up with the idea that the rafts could make new bubbles in space. This would make it easier to get something the size of Brazil into space.

Making this shield out of bubbles is also helpful because if it doesn’t work or has unintended effects, you can always pop a few bubbles to lower the shield.

Scientists have been trying to come up with ways to stop climate change for a long time. The space bubble is the latest idea.

Some of the other technologies that are being worked on are carbon capture devices. These can take in air and filter out carbon particles to make the air cleaner.
