Suarez Refuses To Apologize For The Handball That Expelled Ghana From the 2010 World Cup

Luis Suarez has refused to apologize for deliberately stopping a goal-bound ball with his hands during Uruguay’s 2010 World Cup quarter-final with Ghana.

Suarez was asked about the incident – which deprived Ghana of a winner in extra time and eventually kicked them out of the 2010 tournament – during his press conference earlier today.

Instead of apologizing for his actions, Suarez blamed Asamoah Gyan for missing the ensuing penalty and said their exit from the tournament was not his fault.

A Ghanaian journalist raised the issue during Thursday’s press conference ahead of the final Group H clash between Uruguay and Ghana.

The journalist said Ghanaians consider him “the devil himself” and are eager to take him down.

Suarez responded to the comment by saying, “First time, I don’t apologize for that.” I take the handball – but the Ghanaian player misses a penalty, not me.

“Maybe I apologize if I hurt a player but in this situation I get a red card, the referee says penalty, it’s not my fault.”

All the painful memories of 12 years ago resurface for Ghana as they face Uruguay again in the World Cup.

On Friday, the Africans will face the South Americans knowing that a draw should be enough to see them through at the expense of their rivals.

Plus, it’s a chance for revenge after their dramatic 2010 quarter-final in South Africa was finally won on penalties by La Celeste.

Ghana came close to scoring an overtime winner in the game in 2010 but Suarez once again showed how far he is willing to go to win by hitting a header off the line.

Suarez was duly sent off following his actions and Ghana was awarded a penalty. However, Gyan missed his kick.

Suarez’s celebration added to Ghana’s misery as he jumped for joy before heading into the tunnel.
