This Year’s Summer Game Fest Is Missing Five Big Games

Summer Game Festival has come and gone once again, and many fans are left wondering why the big games were so hard to come by.

With no E3 this year, the Summer Games Fest has functioned as a video game fan’s version of the holiday season, with a slew of events, announcements, and surprises spanning the whole month of June. While fans may have struggled to keep up with the more fragmented schedule of individual events, there was still plenty to be enthused about in terms of titles arriving not just this year but throughout 2023. Despite the plethora of game releases, many fans can not really help but feel that the year’s biggest gaming event was lacking in some of the most anticipated titles.

Despite the fact that the week of activities featured its own original showcase and that both Xbox and Capcom held their own events full of releases, some of the most anticipated titles revealed in recent years failed to appear anywhere during the celebrations. Here are the five main games that were left out of Summer Game Fest 2022, along with an estimate about when fans will learn more about them.

Remake of Dead Space

In a year when the Summer Game Fest showcased a variety of scientific fiction-themed games including Callisto Protocol & indie horror shooter Routine, many fans were surprised that the genre’s grandpa, Dead Space, didn’t make an appearance, especially considering it’s getting a highly anticipated remake.

Motive Studio’s creators have kept the remake’s creation a transparent process by providing regular developer updates that have emphasised the technical side of things. Many fans, on the other hand, were hopeful that Summer Game Fest would finally give them a good look at the game’s gameplay. Dead Space is set to debut in January, so fans can expect a direct update soon this year, hopefully with the demo reveal they’ve been waiting for.

Pragmata

Pragmata by Capcom is yet another game that has remained a mystery despite being released several years ago. Aside from the fact that it appears to be a science fiction-focused event, there has been very little fresh information about the impending action-adventure title since its premiere announcement video two years ago.

Many fans were anticipating to see Pragmata after Capcom announced that it would host its own short conference at the end of the Summer Game Fest celebration. Unfortunately, these aspirations were dashed. While Capcom stated that the conference will focus on games that had already been announced, the roughly 30-minute talk focused on well-known properties such as Resident Evil and Monster Hunter.

Ragnarök, the God of War

The next sequel God of War Ragnarök is by far the most coveted title that was absent from Summer Game Fest. Many fans expected Ragnarök to make an appearance at the Summer Game Fest after its notable absence from Sony’s most recent State of Play; however, it did not show up at all.

With this omission and a release date still set for 2022, fans are speculating that Sony plans to have another demonstration based around Ragnarök somewhere between the summer and fall. Given that God of War Ragnarök is the showpiece of Sony’s exclusives and merits a spotlight to convey its release date, this seems likely.

Hear Atomic

This Soviet-themed spiritual sequel to BioShock stunned fans with its weird universe of killer robots when it was first announced in 2017. Atomic Heart has had a whirlwind development cycle since then, with rumours circulating that the game was relaunched in 2018 due to mismanagement. Despite these setbacks, the developer Mundfish remains optimistic that Atomic Heart will be released later this year.

With the game set to be launched on both new and old PlayStation and Xbox systems, as well as PC, It’s strange that no trailers were shown at any of the Summer Game Fest events. At this point, the silence might indicate that either the programmer is working hard to release Atomic Heart this year or that the project is facing yet another setback.

Bayonetta 3

PlatinumGames’ Bayonetta 3 promises to bring the series’ stunning action to the Nintendo Switch when it was first unveiled in 2017. Despite Nintendo demonstrating gameplay, fans have had few additional details to go on, including no indication of when this highly anticipated action game will be released outside of a broad 2022 timeframe.

Nintendo was almost entirely absent from Summer Game Fest this year, opting instead to stage its own Directs events. Fans are still wondering how, if ever, Bayonetta will return, especially after PlatinumGames’ recent failure of its live service game, Babylon’s Fall. For the time being, it appears that specifics will be scarce unless Nintendo reveals a fresh showcase later this summer.
