Critics praise the humor and music, but write that the magic of the original is not in the sequel.

The first reviews of the film “Hocus Pocus 2” appeared on the Web. Some critics liked the new adventures of the Sanderson sisters, while others felt that Disney should not have made a continuation of the 1993 cult fantasy.

Hocus Pocus 2 has a 68% rating on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of writing, and a 60% rating on Metacritic. And Collider, for example, writes that the sequel has great jokes and musical numbers:

“He creates nostalgic magic with humor, soul and music. It will easily win the hearts of viewers who want to revive the past.”

Paste Magazine adds that the sequel is just as good as the original:

Hocus Pocus 2

“If you liked Hocus Pocus, then you will definitely like Hocus Pocus 2 because it’s kind of the same movie, but with mobile phones, better special effects and a cameo by Hannah Waddingham. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.”

But Screen Rant notes that the authors came out with an unconvincing copy of the first Hocus Pocus:

“It’s just a remastered version of the original, and even the jokes stop working well before the middle of the movie. This Film is enjoyable, but fails to replicate what was so catchy in the 1993 film.”

CBR feels the sequel lacks the magic of the original:
