Modular laptop manufacturer Framework and Google Corporation have announced a new version of Chromebook Edition laptops. As the name suggests, this is a Chromebook with replaceable modules and the ability to re-order new components.

User upgradeable laptops are rare. Therefore, the concept of a Chromebook model with the ability to update a regular user looks quite unusual. It is not clear how much such a format will be in demand in the West, but it would be interesting for the Russian audience.

Some components of the laptop are selected by the user when placing an order. For a further upgrade, each part has a QR code, which, when scanned, opens a page with analogs and more advanced components.

Interestingly, the Chromebook Edition includes the same features as the Windows version. This means that the buyer can choose the ports he needs and their location. For example, you can choose USB-C instead of USB-A, a microSD card slot, the ability to connect an HDMI cable, or an Ethernet connector.

Note for the older generation: the possibility of integrating FDD 3.5″ is not provided by the manufacturer.

Instead, the user can increase the amount of RAM and ROM if necessary. Decorative elements are also subject to replacement. For example, all bezels from Framework are compatible with Chromebook Edition. This means that several color solutions are available to the buyer, and the color of the device can be changed at any time.

The Chromebook has a 3:2 aspect ratio display with a resolution of 2256 x 1504 pixels. The model weighs 1.3 kilograms. The base version of the processor is the 12th generation Core i5-1240P. It also has the ability to turn off the power of the camera and microphones, to maintain privacy. But still, the main reason for buying this model is the ease of upgrading or replacing faulty parts.

Reception of preliminary orders started in the US and Canada. The starting price is $999. Deliveries of devices to customers are scheduled for early December.
