“Since we got the honor of hosting the World Cup, Qatar has been subjected to an unprecedented campaign that no host country has ever faced. Initially, we dealt with the matter in good faith and even considered some of the criticism as positive. and useful to help us develop,” the emir said in a speech at the opening of the Shura Council’s annual session.

“But it soon became clear to us that the campaign tends to continue and expand to include fabrications and double standards that were so vicious that it has sadly led many people to question the real reasons and motives behind this campaign,” the monarch said.

For years and especially in recent days, less than a month before the start of the World Cup, numerous international organizations have recalled Qatar’s history of labor abuses during the construction of the stadiums, as well as the repression against the LGTBI community, documented by NGOs such as Amnesty International or ‘Human Rights Watch.

However, Qatar has come to the defense of these allegations in reports, saying on many occasions that they are “categorically false”.

“Hosting the World Cup incorporates several elements that make up the components of credibility and the ability to influence positively, this is manifested by accepting the challenge and integrating it into our projects and national development plans, as well as at the level of economic, security and administrative capacities. , and at the level of civilized and cultural openness”, the emir pointed out in his speech.

He added that hosting the World Cup is “an occasion in which we portray who we are, not only in terms of the strength of our economy and institutions but also in terms of our identity,” he said.

At the end of his speech, he pointed out that they continue with the work, “each one from his position, to raise the name of the nation, and let us open our arms to receive everyone so that the world can witness the warm hospitality and generosity of the Qataris”.

Exactly 20 years ago, the World Cup came to Asian territory for the first time, more precisely to South Korea and Japan. In addition, it is the first time that an Arab country with a Muslim majority has organized the event.
