On the set of the Western film Rust, where the death of photographer Halyna Hutchins occurred, special prosecutors in New Mexico have stated that they would not pursue actor Alec Baldwin with involuntary manslaughter in connection with the incident. In 2021, Baldwin was practicing a scene at a ranch outside of Albuquerque, N.M., when the gun he was pointing at the camera went off. Hutchins was killed and director Joel Souza was hurt. Baldwin, who is 65 years old and one of the directors of the movie, has said that he shouldn’t be held criminally responsible for what turned out to be a loaded gun.

New facts have come to light that requires further investigation and forensic analysis:

Prosecutors Kari T. Morrissey and Jason J. Lewis said police handed them new information while preparing for a preliminary hearing. “New facts have come to light that requires further investigation and forensic analysis,” they wrote. They also said that the involuntary manslaughter charges against Baldwin were being dropped so that they could look into the case more. “This decision doesn’t mean that Mr. Baldwin isn’t guilty of a crime, and charges could be filed again.”

Luke Nikas and Alex Spiro, Baldwin’s lawyers, said they were glad that the charges were dropped. “We encourage a proper investigation into the facts and circumstances of this tragic accident,” they said in a statement.

Attorneys fully expect that Hannah will also be cleared at the end of this process:

The special prosecutors have stated that the allegations of involuntary homicide against Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the film’s armorer, would not be dropped. Her attorneys told the A.P. that they “fully expect that Hannah will also be cleared at the end of this process.” Her preliminary hearing in New Mexico has been rescheduled for August 9th. David Halls, the assistant director and safety supervisor for Rust, pleaded no contest to his conviction for unsafely handling a gun and a suspended six-month probation sentence last month.

The news that Baldwin was fired came out on the same day that Rust started shooting again, 18 months after it had stopped, at a new site in Montana called Yellowstone Film Ranch.

Baldwin still plays the lead role, Souza is still the director, and Hutchins’ widower Matthew is now the executive producer. He got this job as part of a deal he made with Baldwin and the other producers of Rust after he dropped his wrongful death case against them.

Lawyer Gloria Allred says they are still hoping for severe damages:

Olga Solovey and Anatolii Androsovych, Halyna Hutchin’s parents, and Svetlana Zemki, her sister, are moving forward with their civil lawsuit against Baldwin. Even though the criminal charges against the movie star were dropped, their lawyer Gloria Allred says they are still hoping for severe damages.

“Mr. Baldwin should know that we will continue to fight and win for our clients and hold him accountable for pointing a loaded gun at Halyna Hutchins, pulling the trigger, and killing her,” she said in a statement released on Friday. Mr. Baldwin may try to claim that he wasn’t the one who killed Halyna by pulling the trigger. He can pretend he’s in a Western while living in Montana, but that won’t change the fact that he contributed significantly to a tragedy that negatively impacted Halyna, her parents, sister, and coworker.
