iOS 16.1 Displays Battery % on Face ID iPhones

With iOS 16.1, the percentage of remaining battery life is now displayed on iPhones equipped with Face ID. Because of the large amount of space that was taken up by the notch once Face ID was added to the iPhone, it was no longer able to display the percentage of remaining battery life in the status bar. Users of the iPhone were required to pull down the control center in order to get a glimpse of the remaining percentage of battery life.

iOS 16.1 displays battery % on Face ID iPhones

A new feature called battery percentage was introduced with iOS 16, and when it was enabled, it displayed the amount of the percentage right on top of the battery icon that was located in the status bar. Except for the iPhone XR, the iPhone 11, the iPhone 12 mini, and the iPhone 13 mini, it was added to every single iPhone model that had Face ID.

Multiple users have claimed in the MacRumors forums that the battery percentage feature in the first Beta build of iOS 16 for developers now allows all iPhones with FaceID notches to display a number over the battery icon. This was believed to have occurred in the build.

iOS 16.1 displays battery % on Face ID iPhones: 100% The Good News Is:

MacRumors was the first to notice that the battery percentage indicator is now available to everyone via the first iOS 16.1 beta. Apple never did explain why only some iPhones were able to display the battery percentage indicator once iOS 16 was released, but the company did acknowledge that it is now available to everyone. It is likely to be a few weeks before the update is rolled out to everyone, but at least it appears that those with iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone XR, and iPhone 11 handsets have something to look forward to. That update was released to developers today, and it is likely that it will be a few weeks before it is rolled out to everyone.

People who use iPhones without notches are undoubtedly wondering why all the hoopla is being made about the new design, as these phones have always displayed the percentage of remaining battery life. Face ID and the notch were responsible for the reduction in the size of the status bar, which is why Apple chose to remove the home button when it began shipping the iPhone X in 2017.

Apple now gets around that by putting the percentage inside the battery:

This decision allowed Apple to make the status bar more compact. Apple now gets around that by putting the percentage inside the battery, and it isn’t immediately clear why that wasn’t possible before now, nor why it was only deemed possible on some iPhones until today. However, it is now possible on all iPhones, so it is unclear why it was only deemed possible on some iPhones until today.

It would be unfortunate if Apple were to eliminate the feature from a subsequent beta version of iOS 16.1 or the final version of the software before the owners of all of those other iPhones had the opportunity to appreciate the benefits of actually knowing what percentage of battery life they have left.

The new iPhone 14 range already has the advantage of the improved battery life afforded by iOS 16, so none of this will have an impact on it. The new iPhones are widely considered to be the best iPhones ever produced by Apple.
