Entrepreneur Gas made millions selling the same app to 2 companies

An entrepreneur sold two different versions of the same app to two of the biggest tech companies and made millions of dollars.  The Entrepreneur Nikita Beer came up with the idea for the app “tbh,” which let high school students compliment each other without being seen.

In August 2017, the app came out. Nine weeks later, Facebook bought it for a whopping $40 million.

Before Facebook bought the app, it had been downloaded 5 million times and was used every day by 2.5 million people.

Users could make polls about their friends, always with a positive slant, like “Best to bring to a party?” “Most likely to become a poet?”

Even though the app was number one in the US app store in October of that year, Facebook quickly took it down in July of 2018 because of “low usage.”

The entrepreneur Beer was reportedly bound by a non-compete agreement for five years:

But when that ended last year, he started working on bringing his idea back to life.

In January 2023, Entrepreneur Beer sold a very similar app to Discord, but this new version was different in one important way.

The new app, Gas, lets users pay for a feature called “God Mode,” which gave them hints about who is complimenting them anonymously.

Since it came out in the summer of 2022, 7.4 million people have downloaded Gas and spent almost $7 million on it.

Even for a short time, it was the most downloaded social media app on the Apple store, beating out TikTok. This made The Wall Street Journal call Gas “the hottest app right now.”

“Gas’ founders have a proven track record of making exciting apps:

In a blog post announcing the purchase of Gas, Discord said, “Gas’ founders have a proven track record of making exciting apps and experiences, and we’re excited to work with their team to take things to the next level.

“For now, Gas will stay its own app, and the team behind it will be joining Discord to help us keep growing with both new and old audiences.

“Gas is all about lifting each other up and giving each other power by saying positive things. Its huge success shows how important it is to give young people a place where they can have fun and learn something.

As of October 2022, Gas was being run by a team of four people who have now joined Discord to help run the app.
