Germany can only blame themselves following this 2-1 defeat against a Japanese team yet within their reach. After the opening of the score on penalty in the 33rd minute of play by Ilkay Gündogan, the players of Hansi Flick created many clear chances without scoring.

On the hour mark, Japan took advantage of the Germans’ slowdown and their frustration to start pushing. For Ilkay Gündogan, very upset after the match, this defeat is to be put down to the defense, but not only.

” I don’t know if such an easy goal has ever been scored in the World Cup. It must not happen,” he told ARD.

” We dominated most of the game, Manuel Neuer saved us once, that’s why he’s there. Up front, we had an incredible number of chances but we didn’t score. Then we conceded two goals too easily in the space of eight minutes. This must not happen to us .”

Eliminated in the first round in 2018 when it was defending champion, Germany wanted this 2022 World Cup to be that of redemption. But with a first defeat on the counter against Japan, the situation is complicated. The next game for Germany will be Sunday against Spain, favorite team of the group.

Note that before the start of this meeting, the German players covered their mouths with their hands. According to the German football association, this decision is a consequence of the ban on wearing the One Love armband by FIFA.
